What Had to Go: The Real, Quiet Changes That Shifted My Home

Joshua 24:15

When I first started taking “as for me and my house” seriously, I thought it would look like adding more.. more prayer time, more Bible reading, more intentional habits.

And yes, those things matter. But what I didn’t expect was this: God started asking me to remove things first.

Not in a loud, dramatic way. Not overnight. But in quiet moments, subtle conviction, a pause in my spirit, a feeling I couldn’t ignore anymore. And if I’m being honest… I didn’t love that part.

The Things That Didn’t Feel “That Bad”… But Weren’t Helping Me Grow

This is where I think a lot of women get stuck. Because the things God begins to highlight aren’t always obviously wrong. They’re not always extreme or sinful in a way that feels clear-cut. They’re just… misaligned. For me, it looked like this:

📺 Shows I Used to Watch Without Thinking

There were shows I had watched for years: background noise, something to unwind with at the end of the day. But when I really started paying attention, I realized:

  • They normalized things I was trying to grow away from

  • They shaped my thoughts, expectations, and even my tone

  • They filled my mind more than Scripture did

And the conviction wasn’t:“This is evil.” It was: 👉 “This isn’t helping you become who I’m calling you to be.” That hit differently.

🎧 Music That Didn’t Match the Life I Was Trying to Live

Music is one of those things we don’t question often, but it’s powerful. I had songs I loved. Songs tied to memories, moods, confidence, even identity. But when I slowed down and really listened, I realized:

  • The lyrics didn’t reflect truth

  • The tone didn’t produce peace

  • It stirred emotions that didn’t lead me toward God

And again, it wasn’t about rules. It was about alignment. I had to ask myself: 👉 Why am I filling my space with things that pull me away from the very peace I’m praying for?

📱 Constant Noise and Distraction

This one might have been the hardest. Scrolling. Background noise. Always having something playing. Never sitting in silence. It didn’t feel like a problem… until I realized:

  • I had no space to hear God clearly

  • My mind was constantly full, but not grounded

  • I was overstimulated and spiritually disconnected

There’s a difference between being busy and being filled. And I was full of everything except what actually mattered.

💬 The Way I Spoke (Especially at Home)

This one was uncomfortable. Because it wasn’t about what I consumed—it was about what I produced.

My tone. My reactions. My words when I was stressed or overwhelmed. Nothing extreme. Nothing I would have labeled as “wrong.” But also not:

  • Life-giving

  • Patient

  • Peaceful

And that realization hit hard. Because you can remove all the wrong influences, but if your words still create tension, your home won’t feel like peace.

The Shift: From “This Isn’t That Bad” to “Is This Building My Home?”

That question changed everything for me: Is this building the kind of home I’m praying for?

Not:

  • “Is this allowed?”

  • “Is this technically wrong?”

  • “Does everyone else do this?”

But: Is this helping me create a home centered on Christ? Because once you start asking that, things become clearer.

What I Replaced It With (Without Making It Feel Forced)

This is important, because if all you do is remove, your home will feel empty. And God doesn’t call us to emptiness. He calls us to fullness in the right things. So slowly, naturally, I started replacing:

  • Background TV → Worship music or quiet

  • Mindless scrolling → Short moments in Scripture

  • Reactive words → Pausing before responding

  • Constant noise → Space for stillness

Not perfectly. Not all at once. But intentionally.

What Changed (And What I Didn’t Expect)

I thought these changes would feel restrictive. They didn’t. They felt… lighter. My home started to feel:

  • Quieter (in a good way)

  • Less tense

  • More grounded

  • More peaceful

Not because life got easier, but because the atmosphere shifted. And the biggest surprise? I didn’t miss most of what I let go of. Because once you experience peace that actually lasts, the things that used to fill the space don’t hit the same anymore.

This Isn’t About Perfection, It’s About Awareness

I didn’t get everything right. There were things I held onto longer than I should have. Things I justified. Things I had to revisit more than once. But God is patient in this process. He doesn’t overhaul your life overnight—He walks you into awareness.

If You’re in This Place Right Now

If you’re starting to feel that quiet nudge… that sense that something in your home, your habits, or your environment needs to shift… Don’t ignore it. That’s not guilt. That’s not pressure. That’s God inviting you into something better.

Start small:

  • One show

  • One habit

  • One shift in your environment

You don’t need to change everything at once. Just begin.

Coming Back to the Commitment

“As for me and my house…” isn’t built in big, dramatic moments. It’s built in:

  • What you allow

  • What you release

  • What you choose daily

And sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do… is let go of what no longer belongs in the life you’re stepping into. Because every time you do, you’re not losing something… You’re making room for God to fill your home with something better.
