The Fruit of the Spirit: How to Know If Your Faith Is Actually Growing

One of the most honest questions a Christian can ask is this: Am I really growing spiritually… or am I just staying busy with religious things?

Because it’s possible to:

  • Read your Bible

  • Go to church

  • Post Scripture

  • Pray occasionally

…and still not be changing much on the inside. That’s why God gives us something powerful to examine: The fruit of the Spirit.

Not to shame us. To show us what real transformation looks like.

What Are the Fruit of the Spirit?

Paul writes in Galatians 5:22–23:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

Notice something important:

It says fruit, not fruits. This is one connected work of the Holy Spirit. Not a checklist. Not personality traits. Not things you “try harder” to produce.

They are evidence that God is actively shaping you. Fruit grows naturally when a tree is healthy. So does spiritual fruit.

Fruit Is Proof of Connection

Jesus said:

“I am the vine; you are the branches… apart from Me you can do nothing.”

(See John 15)

Fruit is not about effort. It’s about connection.

When you stay close to Jesus:

  • Through prayer

  • Through Scripture

  • Through obedience

  • Through repentance

His character slowly becomes yours. If there is no fruit, there is likely no deep connection. Not punishment. Just reality.

Love: Do I Love Like Jesus Loves?

Biblical love is not just being “nice.”

It is:

  • Sacrificial

  • Patient

  • Forgiving

  • Unconditional

It shows up when:

  • Someone hurts you

  • Someone disagrees with you

  • Someone doesn’t deserve it

Love asks:
“How can I reflect Christ here?”

Not:
“How do I protect my pride?”

Joy: Do I Have Peace Even When Life Is Hard?

Joy is not happiness. Happiness depends on circumstances. Joy is rooted in Christ.

It says:
“My life is in God’s hands and that’s enough.”

Joy shows up as:

  • Gratitude in hard seasons

  • Hope in uncertainty

  • Contentment without perfection

You can cry and still have joy. You can struggle and still have joy. Because it’s spiritual, not situational.

Peace: Do I Trust God or Do I Constantly Worry?

Peace doesn’t mean you never feel anxious. It means anxiety doesn’t control you.

Peace says:
“God is bigger than this.”

It shows up when:

  • Plans change

  • Prayers take time

  • Life feels unstable

Peace grows when you surrender control. Over and over.

Patience: How Do I Respond When I’m Delayed or Disappointed?

Patience is tested in waiting.

Waiting on:

  • Answers

  • Healing

  • Breakthrough

  • Change

  • People

Impatience says:
“Now.”

Patience says:
“I trust Your timing.”

This fruit grows slowly. And God gives many opportunities to practice it.

Kindness: How Do I Treat People When I Gain Nothing?

Kindness is love in action.

It’s:

  • Encouragement

  • Compassion

  • Thoughtfulness

  • Grace

Especially when no one is watching. Kindness shows who you are when there is no reward.

Goodness: Do My Choices Reflect God’s Heart?

Goodness is moral integrity. It’s choosing what honors God, even when compromise is easier.

It shows up in:

  • What you watch

  • What you say

  • How you work

  • How you handle money

  • How you treat others

Goodness flows from reverence for God. Not fear. Love.

Faithfulness: Am I Consistent or Convenient?

Faithfulness is reliability in your walk with God.

It’s staying committed when:

  • You’re tired

  • You’re bored

  • You’re discouraged

  • You’re unnoticed

Faithfulness says:
“I’ll keep showing up.”

Not because it’s exciting. Because God is worthy.

Gentleness: How Do I Respond When I’m Hurt or Corrected?

Gentleness is strength under control. It is not weakness. Jesus was gentle and powerful.

Gentleness shows up as:

  • Calm responses

  • Humble correction

  • Soft speech

  • Emotional maturity

It refuses to fight every battle. It chooses grace.

Self-Control: Who Is Really in Charge of My Life?

Self-control is surrender in practice. It’s allowing the Holy Spirit to lead your choices.

It shows up in:

  • What you say

  • What you eat

  • What you watch

  • How you spend time

  • How you react emotionally

Self-control says:
“My desires don’t rule me. God does.”

Why Fruit Matters More Than Gifts

Many Christians focus on spiritual gifts.

Talent.
Influence.
Platform.
Ability.

But God cares more about fruit. Because gifts impress people. Fruit reflects Christ.

You can be gifted and unkind. Talented and prideful. Influential and impatient. But you cannot be spiritually healthy without fruit.

Growth Is Gradual — Not Instant

Here’s something important: Fruit grows over time. You don’t become patient overnight. You don’t master self-control instantly. You don’t perfect love in a year.

Growth is:

Slow.
Messy.
Uneven.
Real.

If you see progress, even small, God is working. Don’t despise small growth.

A Gentle Self-Check

Ask yourself honestly:

Where am I seeing growth?
Where am I resisting change?
Which fruit feels weakest right now?
What is God inviting me to surrender?

Not for shame. For awareness. God grows what you give Him.

How to Cultivate the Fruit of the Spirit

You don’t force fruit. You cultivate it. Here’s how:

1. Stay Close to God Daily

Prayer. Word. Worship. Silence.

2. Respond Quickly to Conviction

Don’t delay repentance.

3. Practice Obedience in Small Things

Big fruit grows from small faithfulness.

4. Invite God Into Weak Areas

Don’t hide struggles. Surrender them.

5. Be Patient With the Process

God is not finished with you.

Final Encouragement

The fruit of the Spirit is not about perfection. It’s about transformation. It’s about slowly becoming more like Jesus. In your reactions. In your relationships. In your private life. In your choices.

If you are growing in love… more peaceful… more patient… more gentle… more faithful…

God is working. And that is something to celebrate.
