Phrases That Sound Good… But Quietly Pull You Away from God
We hear them all the time…
They’re posted on Instagram. Printed on shirts. Spoken as advice. They sound empowering. They feel comforting. But when you hold them up to Scripture… they don’t hold. Not everything that feels good is true. And not everything that sounds positive is biblical. Let’s talk about a few…
“Trust yourself”
→ Truth: Trust God
The world says: Look within. You already have the answers.
But Scripture says something very different:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5
Your feelings shift. Your perspective is limited. Your heart can be influenced by fear, pride, or wounds.
God?
He sees the full picture. Self-trust leads to confusion. God-trust leads to clarity.
“Follow your heart”
→ Truth: Lead your heart
This one sounds romantic. Almost poetic. But the Bible gives a warning:
“The heart is deceitful above all things…” — Jeremiah 17:9
Your heart isn’t meant to be your guide. It’s meant to be guarded and led.
“Above all else, guard your heart…” — Proverbs 4:23
If you follow your heart, you’ll drift. If you lead your heart with truth, you’ll stand.
“Do what makes you happy”
→ Truth: Do what makes you holy
Happiness is temporary. Holiness is eternal.
“Be holy, because I am holy.” — 1 Peter 1:16
God is not primarily concerned with your comfort. He’s concerned with your transformation. And ironically? Holiness produces a deeper, lasting joy that happiness never could.
“You only live once (YOLO)”
→ Truth: You live forever
The world says:,This life is everything. The Bible says: This life is preparation.
“Man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.” — Hebrews 9:27
You don’t just live once. You live forever, somewhere. What you do now echoes into eternity.
“Speak your truth”
→ Truth: Speak THE truth
There aren’t multiple truths. There’s one.
“Your word is truth.” — John 17:17
Your experience matters. Your story matters. But your truth doesn’t override God’s truth. We don’t define truth. We align with it.
Closing
Be careful what you repeat. Because what you repeat… you start to believe. And what you believe will shape how you live. Not every popular phrase is harmless. Some slowly replace God’s voice with your own.
So instead of asking: “Does this sound good?”
Ask: “Does this line up with Scripture?”
