Following Jesus Still Costs Everything

It’s easy, especially in the West, to believe persecution is something that happened back then. Ancient Rome. Early martyrs. Stories we read, not realities we face.

But right now, today, there are believers who don’t just risk being misunderstood.

They risk:

  • prison

  • torture

  • exile

  • death

Not for politics. Not for rebellion. For following Jesus.

This Isn’t History. It’s Happening Now.

In the last 100 years—and especially in the last few decades—millions of Christians have lived out their faith in places where it is illegal, dangerous, or deadly.

Not quietly uncomfortable.

Actively dangerous.

And yet—they still gather.
They still pray.
They still believe.

China: Faith That Goes Underground

In China, Christianity is tightly controlled by the government.

Only state-approved churches are allowed, where:

  • sermons are monitored

  • Scripture is regulated

  • and loyalty to the state is emphasized

So many believers choose another path: The underground church.

They meet:

  • in homes

  • in basements

  • in secret locations

No signs. No announcements. No guarantees of safety.

If discovered, they can face:

  • arrest

  • surveillance

  • imprisonment

And yet, the Church in China continues to grow. Not because it’s easy. Because it’s real.

North Korea: Faith That Can Cost Your Life

North Korea is often considered one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a Christian. There are no open churches. No public worship. No freedom to believe.

If someone is discovered with a Bible or practicing Christianity, they and often their entire family, can be sent to labor camps.

And still… faith exists. Whispered prayers. Hidden Scripture. Songs sung silently in the heart.

There are accounts of believers:

  • memorizing entire books of the Bible because they can’t own one

  • risking everything to share even a single verse

  • choosing faith knowing the cost is not metaphorical, it’s real

The Middle East: Faith in the Face of Violence

In parts of the Middle East, following Jesus can mean being seen as a traitor to your culture, your family, or your nation.

In recent years, extremist groups like ISIS specifically targeted Christians. Churches were burned. Homes were marked. Believers were given a choice:

  • convert

  • leave

  • or die

And some refused to walk away. Not because they didn’t understand the cost… But because they believed Jesus was worth it.

Modern Martyrs: Not Just Stories From the Past

In 2015, 21 Coptic Christians were executed on a beach in Libya by ISIS. Many of them were recorded speaking the name of Jesus in their final moments. Not centuries ago. In our lifetime.

These are not distant legends. They are modern martyrs.

People who:

  • had families

  • had jobs

  • had lives

And still chose Christ, even when it cost everything.

Why We Don’t Talk About This Enough

Because it confronts us. It forces us to ask uncomfortable questions like:

  • What does my faith actually cost me?

  • Would I still follow if it became dangerous?

  • Do I value comfort more than conviction?

In places where Christianity is easy, it can become:

  • routine

  • cultural

  • convenient

But persecution strips all of that away. What remains is real faith.

The Faith That Survives Pressure

What’s remarkable is this: In many of these regions, the Church is not shrinking.

It’s growing. Not because conditions are favorable… But because faith, when tested, becomes:

  • deeper

  • stronger

  • unshakable

There’s no room for casual belief when the cost is everything.

What This Means for Us

This isn’t about guilt. It’s about perspective. Because while we may not face the same level of persecution, we are still called to:

  • stand in truth

  • live with conviction

  • follow Jesus fully, not selectively

Comfort can quietly weaken what persecution strengthens.

The Gospel Has Always Had a Cost

Jesus never promised safety.

He promised:

  • sacrifice

  • opposition

  • and a narrow path

But He also promised something greater: That following Him is worth it.

The Bottom Line

There are believers right now who:

  • whisper prayers instead of speaking them

  • hide Scripture instead of displaying it

  • risk their lives instead of protecting their comfort

And they still choose Jesus.

Final Thought

Following Jesus has never been about convenience. It has always been about surrender. And while the cost may look different depending on where you live, The call is the same.

So the real question isn’t: “Is persecution happening?” It is.

The question is: “If following Jesus cost you everything… would you still follow?”
